If you're the victim of identity theft, immediately call your bank and ask for help. If an account has been compromised, ask that your current accounts be put on hold − especially for online and ATM transactions. If you simply suspect a potential problem, ask that a warning be placed on all your accounts, and ask for password protection. In some cases password protection can apply to online, telephone, and in-person transactions. If you like you can also place purchase amount limits on credit and debit cards.
Even if you don't suspect identity theft, ask your bank for tips on ways to protect your accounts and your identity − they'll be glad to share advice, tips, and instructions for what to do if you suspect identity theft may have occurred.
