Freeze Your Card Literally
Using credit cards for everyday purchases is tempting. If you have decided you only want to use a card in an emergency, but you don’t want to cancel the account, here’s a simple way to make it harder to give in to temptation: Freeze the card. Literally.
Simply put your card in a small, sealable plastic container and water until the container is about three-fourths full. (Water expands when it freezes, so leave some room for expansion.) Then put the container in the freezer. If you ever do need the card, you’ll have to thaw the ice first which should give you some time to think about whether the situation is truly an emergency, and if you have other options besides using the credit card.
